Hubcaps
Read MoreThe early Canadian had an enameled McL-Buick badge and may have been used extensively for the export market. '29 export production began in June 1928 to hit a global August introduction. In earlier years, special hubcaps were made just for exports. This might explain why domestic examples are virtually nonexistent.
The 1929 Buick has been designated as the first Buick wholly designed by Harley Earl and his newly established Art and Color section. We know he was not happy that the Engineering Dept. altered his final design and he may not have initially appreciated or approved of the McLaughlin cap design. This might explain why the US style cap was used in production until Jan. 1929. It is still a mystery why the US style cap used on most early 1929 Buicks does not appear in the McLaughlin Parts listing.
And, given how crude the graphics and finish are on the existing samples, it’s possible they do not meet manufacturing standard examples from Buick. The "c" and "L" are atypically spaced and the "k", in Buick, exceeds the typical rectangular boundaries and the finish is generally substandard.
